Your Diet After a Gastric Bypass

Eating well is essential for the success of any weight loss surgery, so your doctor will make sure that you understand exactly what you can and can’t eat after your private gastric bypass at a UK hospital. You will also receive plenty of advice on eating well in the long term.

The First Six Weeks

You will have to be careful about the kinds of foods that you eat while you are recovering from the operation. Your doctor will explain exactly what you are allowed to eat at each stage of your recovery following your private gastric bypass in the UK, but in most cases you will need to stick to a liquid only diet for the first week. You will then be able to introduce small quantities of pureed foods over the next few weeks, before moving on to some soft food after about four weeks. You should be able to eat most foods after about six weeks, but you will still need to be careful about what and how much you eat. If your surgery is to be a success, you need to eat a healthy, balanced diet that will help you to lose weight.

Beyond Recovery

After the first six weeks, your diet should begin to look more normal. You should stick to the diet you have developed with your doctor or dietician and try to avoid falling back into old habits. Try to enjoy each meal slowly, stop eating when you are full, and don’t allow yourself to start snacking. You will be able to eat most kinds of foods, although you should avoid fatty, sugary and high-calorie foods. Avoiding sugar is particularly important when you have chosen to have private gastric bypass surgery from the options available in the UK. If you eat too much sugar, you may experience dumping syndrome, which can result in nausea, stomach ache, light-headedness, and diarrhoea. You will also need to take supplements to ensure that you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need after a gastric bypass.
