Life After Bariatric Surgery

If you are considering bariatric surgery, then you already know how important it is to eat well and live a healthy lifestyle. It is one of the first things your doctor will discuss with you when you talk about having surgery to help with your weight loss. Before you commit to having surgery, your doctor will want to make sure that you have tried the other options, and it is also important to be sure that you can commit to making the right lifestyle changes after you have the surgery.

Although bariatric surgery can help to reduce your appetite and restrict the amount of food that you can eat in one go, it will still take a lot of hard work to get rid of your excess weight. Your doctor will give you personalised advice on your recovery and will also help you to come up with a diet and exercise plan that will help you to lose weight.

You will be restricted at first to liquid foods, but you will gradually be able to add soft foods, and eventually regular solid meals, to your diet. The schedule for this will depend on the type of surgery you have had, but you will probably be ready to adopt your long term diet after about six weeks. Your new diet should be healthy, nutritionally balanced, and designed to help you shed your excess weight. It should also be paired with regular exercise, which can gradually increase in duration and intensity as your fitness improves.

If you stick to your diet and exercise plan, then you can expect to lose on average 50 to 70% of your excess weight, depending on the type of bariatric surgery that you have had. However, maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong commitment, so even when you reach your goal, you will still need to keep eating well and exercising regularly.
