The number of people who are clinically obese has skyrocketed in recent years. A statistical report in 2007 estimated that over half of the UK population would be obese by the year 2050. However, with the numbers of people who are struggling with obesity exceeding expectations, a group called The National Obesity Forum predicted that this figure was an under-estimation of the problem and called for the government to do something more to address the crisis.
A corresponding epidemic of diabetes has also occurred in response to Britain’s escalating weight. Now, for people who are morbidly obese and for whom dieting and other interventions failed, new research has found that having weight loss surgery can prevent diabetes and may even reverse it if you already have it.
A study published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal followed nearly 5,000 people who were undergoing weight loss surgery and they found that they were 80% less likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, compared to obese people who didn’t have surgery. The results have so impressed the NHS that they are considering offering bariatric surgery to thousands of people in an effort to curb diabetes.
Another research team who printed their study in the Annals of Surgery reported that patients had a 24% total remission rate of their diabetes after surgery, with a further 26% having partial remission, 34% had an improvement in severity and only 16% remained unchanged. With positive results like this, doctors are increasingly viewing bariatric surgery as a potential ‘cure’ for diabetes, a modern miracle for diabetes sufferers who may be able to say goodbye to daily injections.
