What Causes Obesity?

Obesity is a complex problem that usually has many different causes. Understanding the reasons for obesity should help you to bring your weight under control.

Eating Too Much, Not Moving Enough

The most obvious reason for obesity is that you are taking in too many calories. Sometimes this is because you are eating too much, but in other cases it can be due to the types of foods that you choose. Even if you are only having small portions, some foods contain so much fat and sugar that you can still put on weight.

The other side of the equation is the amount of energy that you are using up. Although this will be affected by your height, build, gender and natural metabolism, it is also determined by how active you are. You need to match your diet to your level of physical activity, otherwise the extra calories you are consuming will end up as excess weight.

Other Factors that Can Affect Your Weight

Your diet and activity levels are two of the most important influences on your weight, and they are both under your control. Although it won’t always be easy, you can change them in order to lose weight and improve your health. However, other factors can also affect your weight:

-Genetics: Your genes may make you more likely to be overweight, but you can still overcome this tendency by making the right choices. -Medical conditions or treatments: If you have an under-active thyroid or you’re taking drugs such as steroids, it can make it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight. -Social and cultural factors: The people around you can influence the way you eat, as can the messages you see in advertising or on TV. Surrounding yourself with healthy influences and resisting pressure to make unhealthy choices can help you to lose weight. -Difficulty accessing healthy options: We are surrounded by unhealthy options like fast food and sugary drinks. It’s important to put the effort in to find the healthier choices. -Emotional triggers: Problems such as depression, loneliness and anxiety can affect the way you eat. Overcoming these can be important if you want to lose weight. -Lack of sleep: A good night’s sleep is essential for your health and it can actually reduce the chances of becoming obese.
